Around 2005, round-the-world sailors navigating in poorly charted areas became aware of the potential of using satellite imagery to supplement nautical charts. Canadian navigator Paul Higgins then developed software that allowed these images to be exported in an electronic chart format compatible with navigation software. Since then, numerous sources of royalty-free data have been made available to the public under the European INSPIRE directive, including certain data from the French Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service (SHOM) and the French National Geographic Institute (IGN) relevant to our topic. While technically creating a chart is easy, it is nevertheless essential to understand the process to avoid making mistakes and putting oneself in danger. With this in mind, a brief overview of electronic charts and their limitations will be provided. After presenting some free and open-source software, the various possibilities they offer will be explored through concrete examples: grounding at Porsguen (Plouescat) and plotting a coastal route to reach Brignogan.
