RM 1050 for living aboard

Messagepar yus » 07 nov. 2016, 13:57

Dear Friends,
It is my first post here. First of all I'm sorry I cannot speak French, but I understand reading.
I live in the south of Italy, I would explore the possibilty to change my boat and buy a RM 1050. Do you think it is a suitable boat for long distance cruises and for living aboard? I know the RM 1200 would be better, but out of budget!
Any suggestions from who own this beautiful boat?
Many thanks.
Yus

Yes Daniel, I really like your blog.
In fact I'm amazed to see that many people does great trips aboard the RM1050, instead I havent found so many RM1200 around world.
Why the 1050 is more choised for sailing adventures than the 1200?
Do you have any explanation?
I dont think is just a matter of money.
Regards, yus.

Hello Yus,
please don't start a fight between 1050 and 1200 :-)
just kidding, no worries
Maybe a first explanation is just maths: number of 1050 built exceeds by far the number of 1200 built?
For my own case, I reckon I'm not (yet) a long distance sailor, and cannot compare with Daniels and others, but I do know many 1200 who sail around the globe. Last example in our association is Aurelien and his family on Penn Gwenn.

Enjoy RMs, whatever the length :-)

Hi Yus
I confirm what Daniel and Guy said, you can have a look on the blog of Badoc http://www.badoc.cat/new2/ (RM 1050 n° 49) who sailed all around the world for 2 or 3 years.
I sailed during 16 months on my 1050 Ovento from Brittany to Madeira, Canarias, Capo Verde, Brazil, West Indies and Azores 8 years ago and it was a wonderful trip.
You can display this page for other experiences, as well on RM 1200 as on RM 1050:

Dear friends,

Thank you so much for your comments. I really like so much any Blog of you all. Congratulations!
I think the boat (the 1050) could suit the needs of our two in fact.
I have read about a structural problem of the 1050 due to a design error of the must base. Did I understand well? Could you be so kind to explain me the problem and how to check the boat before the buying?

Greetings.

yus

Could somebody tell me something regarding the RM 1050 height inside?
I have read that it is possible to stand up only at the entrance (kitchen and chart desk) and not around the table in the salon.
What is the inner height going from aft to the front?

Thank you,

y.

Thank you so much for the precious article.
I have then realized that headroom inside is limited only to the first area. I would really like to visit a boat to check directly the space.
I have seen an Ovni 345 which is also very interesting for same lenght.
Does somebody had experience with this boat? any comparison?
Thanks. Y.

hello Yus
IMHO an OVNI is a totally different boat: Aluminium is heavier than plywood, which combined with a smaller sail area gives a much slower boat. As a counterpart with aluminium you feel probably easier among growlers :-)
If headroom is the concern, and you like the idea of fast light plywood hulls, why don't you look at RM1060?
(as you could have guessed I love RMs :-))
regards
Guy

Hello Guy,

I thought the headroom of the 1060 was the same as the 1050. Isn't the same?

Hi Yus
1060 owners will confirm or not, but my impression is that there is more room inside a 1060.
Look at this video
http://cdn.streamlike.com/uc/getCode?bw ... &width=645

the journalist measures 1.90m and he says that he keeps standing almost everywhere.

Having said that I have no direct experience of 1060, please do not take my words for more than one blah-blah among others :-)

Thank you so much Guy for the video.
It would be great to have the possibility to visit both boats (the 1050 and the 1060).
The main problem is the budget: to get a 1060 is a heavy step up in comparison to the 1050. For the same money (or just a bit more) of the 1060 you can even find a 1200.

Do you know some RM 1050 or /and 1060 which is placed in Sicily? I would like to arrange a visit.
